On December 16, 2024, the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) inaugurated the National Center for Energy Storage System Technology (NEST) at Tongluo Science Park. The ceremony celebrated the culmination of efforts led by the BSMI and was attended by Deputy Director-General Han-Chang Hsieh of the BSMI, Deputy County Magistrate Li-Li Chiu of Miaoli County, Chairman Ren-Yi Lin of the Metal Industries Research and Development Center, and other distinguished guests. It marks a new chapter in Taiwan's energy transition.
NEST now stands as Taiwan's largest energy storage system safety testing laboratory and one of the world's premier facilities in this field. Equipped with cutting-edge laboratories for fire, combustion, vibration, and environmental testing, NEST boasts a 360 kW/360 kWh energy storage system safety testing capacity, offering the most comprehensive testing capabilities available. This facility will enable Taiwanese manufacturers to conduct testing locally, eliminating the need to send products abroad. By significantly reducing testing costs and timelines, NEST enhances the competitiveness of Taiwan's energy storage industry in the global market and strengthens the nation's position in the international green energy supply chain.
As energy storage systems become vital for stabilizing renewable energy, NEST plays a crucial role in ensuring their safety and reliability. The center will focus on safety evaluations for energy storage systems and electric bus batteries, addressing key safety challenges and safeguarding public welfare. In doing so, NEST not only supports Taiwan's renewable energy development but also contributes to the broader goal of energy transition and sustainability.
The BSMI has actively developed CNS national standards and technical specifications for energy storage systems while building advanced testing capabilities to meet the industry's growing needs. NEST ensures the safety and stability of renewable energy systems, reinforcing Taiwan's leadership in the global green energy sector.
The opening ceremony also featured an international seminar on energy storage system safety, bringing together experts and industry leaders to discuss international standards, safety certification, and emerging trends. This platform fosters cross-border collaboration and positions Taiwan as a key player in energy storage innovation. With NEST, Taiwan strengthens its role in advancing renewable energy safety, supporting industrial growth, and achieving its net-zero carbon ambitions.
