After 36 Years of Service, Taipower Begins Dismantling Coal-Fired Units 1 and 2 at Taichung Power Plant.
Coal-fired Units 1 and 2 at Taichung Power Plant were shut down on September 30, marking the end of their power generation service. The units were officially retired on October 1, with dismantling work commencing the same day. Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) held a blessing ceremony today (7th) to pray for the smooth progress of the 28-month dismantling project. Taipower emphasized its commitment to complying with occupational safety and environmental protection requirements throughout the project, which is expected to be completed in early 2029.

Taipower stated that coal-fired Units 1 and 2, with a combined installed capacity of 1.1 million kilowatts (kW), have been major contributors to Taiwan's electricity supply since entering service in 1990. Over their 36 years of operation, the two units generated nearly 280 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, providing a stable power supply for industries and households in central Taiwan. Throughout this period, Taipower pursued its coal consumption and emissions reduction goals through three phases: Air Pollution Control, Increasing Gas and Reducing Coal, and Coal-to-Gas Transition, balancing the need for a reliable electricity supply with environmental protection. With new gas-fired generating units at Taichung Power Plant progressively coming online, the two coal-fired units have now completed their mission and been retired. Taipower has simultaneously initiated dismantling operations, continuing to fulfill its commitment to energy transition and coal reduction.

Taipower explained that the dismantling project involves the removal of large-scale heavy equipment and extensive work at height, covering the seawater pump house area, boiler house and turbine building areas, as well as the 252-meter-high chimney area. Dismantling work will proceed simultaneously across these areas, with Taipower ensuring compliance with occupational safety and environmental protection requirements to ensure the project progresses safely and steadily. The entire dismantling project is expected to be completed in early 2029, after which the site will be used for the Phase II Gas-Fired Power Generation Project at Taichung Power Plant.
